The Val-Dieu Abbey (Valley of God in French) is a former monastery and dates back to 1216. In 1997, the brewery opened its doors, where a range of abbey beers is brewed, all in the tradition of the former Val-Dieu monks. The last 3 remaining monks left in 2001 to join a larger monastery in the Val-Dieu area.

The Cistercian Abbey of Notre Dame du Val-Dieu was founded in 1216 by monks from Hocht, near Maastricht.
