The camera was designed specifically for the female consumer in a male dominated market. The advertising leaflet for the camera shows what a charming lady should take when leaving home. As well as her normal accessories of a necklace, earrings and ring, the Penti II was shown as an essential addition to give that finishing touch to her lifestyle.

The Welta Penti II is a fun camera, mine is gold color. It uses SL film, which is regular 35mm film in a special canister that looks and feels the same as the Agfa Rapid caniters. It produces half frame images, vertical images of 18mm by 24mm. The Penti II has a meter, but good luck finding one that still work. Anyways, you have full manual.

The Penti II was an upgraded model from the original Penti with a new body, lens, and adding a coupled selenium cell light meter. These cameras have a trademark gold front and rear plate along with a gold trimmed Meyer-Optik Domiplan lens. The middle part of the body came in a variety of colors like black, white, teal, and even pink.

In 1961 the Penti II was introduced by Pentacon 's predecessor VEB Kinowerke. This version made it a real classic, combining the uniquely designed full featured viewfinder camera with viewfinder-controlled coupled match-needle selenium meter. It was produced until 1977. The Penti I was similar to the II, but without the meter.
